Retro Alien Quad-Walker Ambush

I while ago, some friends of mine and I conceived a Dungeons and Dragons game that was set in a retro 1950's/early 60's-style sci-fi setting with all of the rocket-ships, ray guns, rubbery aliens and what have you that you'd expect from such a setting. Alas, the game never ultimately took off, but I liked the ideas so much that I continued to develop the concept visually any way. That's how this scene of an astronaut having a standoff with an alien walking machine came about, and hopefully it looks fittingly retro. It's not the first painting that I've done for this world either and I fully intend to paint more from this world, so keep your peepers peeled here if retro sci-fi is your jam! ;)
Also, in the spirit of trying to get better at artwork generally, please feel free to leave me feedback and critique if you have any. ^_^

My thumbnail scribbles of various scenes with the 'Quad-Walker'. I ultimately settled on my third design on the bottom left, but I'll likely explore some of the others in future paintings.

These are the sections of the alien 'quad-walker' that were rendered out of Maya. They're pretty simple models, but invaluable for getting the perspective of the vehicle right.

Here's a few process shots of the painting, which reveal my initial plans to feature a binary star system. I decided against it ultimately as I thought it distracted too much from the composition.

As always, I like to let everyone see a value version of the painting to help them dissect of my process.

And just for kicks, here's a version that's been made to look like a still from a retro movie, complete with hammy film grain and everything! ;)
